MDS Nordion - Vancouver Cyclotron ExpansionUniversity of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia
The MDS Nordion project consists of installing a third TR-30 Cyclotron and Hot Cells for the processing of the isotopes to their existing facility at TRIUMF. New workshops, a control room, office spaces, new lunchrooms and shower facilities are also part of the program.
A major feature of this addition is the construction of a 3 story subterranean concrete vault to house the cyclotron. Radiation shielding is a major factor in the design of this concrete vault. The support spaces are located in a 2 story structure above grade. The challenge in this project was to fit the program requirements into a very limited site area. The exterior appearance was designed to be unique but complementary to the existing facility.
Final Construction Cost: $5,365,000
