Guelph Eatons Centre Redevelopment OptionsGuelph, Ontario
As part of a larger study for determining improvements to the Guelph Eatons Centre, PBK was responsible for preparing two redevelopment options. In both cases, historic Quebec Street was reintroduced through the block to engage the site with the surrounding urban fabric, while creating a strong visual and symbolic link between St. George Square and the new Guelph Entertainment Complex Arena.
While the two options proposed varying levels of architectural intervention, both design approaches were sensitive to the unique character of Guelph's downtown. The proposed public connections and plaza, street furnishings, planting, and the mix of uses, were designed to achieve a strong public realm; to accommodation for a variety of activities considered critical to the successful redevelopment of the mall; and, to encourage the revitalization of the downtown area.
